Luxury Vinyl Flooring: Types, Evolution & Industry Trends
Luxury vinyl flooring has become one of the fastest-growing segments of the resilient flooring market, offering durability, water resistance, and stylish aesthetics. Unlike traditional sheet vinyl flooring, luxury vinyl is available in several forms, each with unique compositions and benefits.
Evolution of Luxury Vinyl Flooring
The development of Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) and Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) began in the 1970s, expanding the resilient flooring options beyond traditional sheet vinyl, vinyl tile, and vinyl composition tile. Over time, the luxury vinyl category has grown to include advanced products such as EVP (Engineered Vinyl Plank), WPC (Wood Plastic Composite), and SPC (Stone Plastic Composite)—each offering different core materials and structural features.
Types of Luxury Vinyl Flooring & Their Composition
LVP & LVT – Luxury Vinyl Plank & Tile
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) and Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) are composed of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resins, combined with stabilizers and fungicides to enhance durability. These products generally feature a rigid construction, providing long-lasting performance.
EVP – Engineered Vinyl Plank Flooring
EVP is a hybrid between engineered hardwood, laminate, and LVP. It is thicker and more rigid than traditional LVP, featuring a multi-layer structure that includes:
- Engineered polymer composite core
- Vinyl top layer
- Protective wear layer
WPC – Wood Plastic Composite Flooring
WPC flooring, sometimes referred to as Waterproof Core Flooring, includes a vinyl top layer over a wood/plastic-based core. Despite its name, WPC does not contain actual wood—instead, it is made from wood flour fused with thermoplastic and calcium carbonates, offering comfort and sound absorption benefits.
SPC – Stone Plastic Composite Flooring
SPC flooring is rigid core vinyl, constructed using natural limestone powder, PVC, and stabilizers. While SPC is often marketed as waterproof, the more accurate term is water-resistant, as it withstands moisture but can still suffer damage from prolonged exposure.
SPC’s Rise and Challenges in the Market
In 2019–2020, SPC flooring led the resilient flooring market, experiencing rapid growth. However, by 2023, retailers and industry experts noted durability concerns due to lower-quality, mass-produced SPC options flooding the market. While SPC remains a strong player, inferior product lines have caused installation failures and a decline in consumer trust.
Flooring Quality vs. Pricing
As with all flooring types—including carpet, wood, laminate, and vinyl—there are high-quality and low-quality options. Manufacturers frequently try to produce cheaper flooring to meet consumer demand, but lower prices often mean higher failure rates. A wise saying from my father, who started in the flooring industry in 1934, still rings true:
“Price is soon forgotten, but quality remains.”
